Neurmodulation devices are changing the manner in which doctors treat diseases and clinical conditions. In medicine today, neuromodulation devices are being used to help doctors treat a variety of conditions such as, Parkinson’s, pain, depression, obesity, and spinal cord injuries. The potential market for implantable neuromodulation devices is approaching $2 billion annually.

While the market for implantable neuromodulation devices is significant, the pharmaceutical treatments for these same clinical conditions and diseases are in the excess of $20 billion annually. New applications being developed for neuromodulation devices have the potential to significantly expand the use of this technology.

The drawback of a majority of the current implantable nerve stimulation/ neuromodulation devices currently on the market are that they require surgical procedures to implant and are typically, limited to addressing the most chronic patients. The devices and related surgical procedures are expensive and have significant associated morbidity, and as a result, their application is limited to a very small subset of potential patients currently taking pharmaceuticals as regular treatment for their conditions.
